THE COURSE

Below is an overview of the course as well as descriptions of the different sessions available during a typical day.

Session 1,2 & 4: Tutorial and Topics

Options A, B and C  run through the whole week and you will be in the same group for A, another group for B and yet another for C during the course. There will be a mixture of Tutorials and Topics of all levels on offer in each of Option A, B and C.

Tutorials run through the week and are for those wishing to focus predominantly on solo repertoire and on improving their playing/technique. The repertoire will be for solo recorder as well as for duet/trio. It is very important to prepare the set music in advance if you and others are to benefit fully from the tutorial classes.

Topics run through the week and take place at the same time as the tutorials. The tutors have picked topics which interest them and which they would like to share with the students. The music for the Topic sessions will be supplied on the course. In order to get an idea of how things will work, please look at the links below for last year’s Recorder Summer School.

Sessions 3 and 5: Ensembles

There will 5 or 6 ensembles on offer twice a day, graded in order of difficulty. Students are free to attend whichever they choose and only need to decide the evening before. This will give everyone the opportunity to work with all tutors and play a wide variety of music.

You can see the 2024 Ensemble list by clicking here.

Concert

We are very excited to announce that this year we have a young recorder quartet from Germany, ensemble feuervogel, coming to join us at RSS for 3 days. They will be taking some ensemble sessions on Wednesday afternoon and playing a concert for us all on Thursday evening. They are an exciting group, two of whom reached the final of the SRP/Moeck Solo Competition in Blackheath last Autumn.

Shops

Recorder Music Mail will have a well-stocked music shop, including all music required for the course. The Early Music Shop will sell recorders, other early instruments and CDs. Barry Holder will also come with EMS for a couple of days to do recorder repairs. Recorder maker, Jo Kunath (Paetzold recorders) will be joining us for 2 days with Anthony Barrett and will be able to do some repairs to your instruments. Stephen Robinson will also be there to show off his hand made spinets.

Please don’t assume RSS’s endorsement of any of these services. Any transactions made are at your own risk.
